Leonardo designed this device for boring holes in logs lengthwise, so they could be used for water mains. The machine automatically centers the log so that the hole will be drilled down the center, no matter how wide the log is. Logs were used for water mains until the 17th century, when they were replaced by cast-iron pipes.
